Building new functional films facility in China / Catering to rising agricultural films demand
As Chinese demand for agricultural greenhouses continues to rise, Mitsubishi Plastics (Tokyo / Japan; www.mpi.co.jp/english) will start construction of a new functional films facility in Wuxi, Jiangsu / China in autumn 2012. The 4,000 t/y plant, which comes at a price tag of almost EUR 8.5m, is due to begin operations in mid-2013. Mitsubishi Plastics has set up a wholly owned subsidiary to manage the plant – Wuxi Lingshu Agricultural Film & Material Technology.

Once construction is complete, the new plant will produce and sell highly functional polyolefin films with a special coating that can be used as external films for agricultural greenhouses. Mitsubishi Plastics says the films currently in use in China are single-layer only and have a lifespan of about one year. By contrast, the Japanese group’s films consist of multiple layers and can be used for three to five years. In setting up the facility, Mitsubishi Plastics also hopes to capture a slice of China’s growing solar-powered plant market.
