New developments in materials and additives on display at K 2004
Ferro with new metallic colour masterbatches
The new “Nimex” metallic colour masterbatches produced by the plastics division of Ferro Holland (NL-3002 AB Rotterdam; www.ferro.com) are claimed to reduce the knit lines that generally develop at the injection point of finished products. The company´s proprietary technology distributes the metallic particles so evenly that it is no longer necessary to print or paint the surface, says Ferro.

Adeka Palmarole presents extended additive range
France´s Adeka Palmarole (F-68300 Saint-Louis; www.adeka-palmarole.com) will present new transparency enhancers, blowing agents, PVC stabilisers and many more items from its extended additive range at K 2004. Its new flame retardant “ADK STAB FP-2100” is an odourless powder with a high thermal stability that the company says is designed to cope with standard process conditions for polyolefins. The product is claimed to have a high extraction stability and low migration, not effloresce or interact with standard stabilisers.

Laser-marking for medical uses from Gabriel Chemie
The K 2004 stand of Austria´s Gabriel-Chemie (A-2352 Gumpoldskirchen; www.gabriel-chemie.com) will showcase advances the company has achieved in transparent laser additives for marking transparent PA grades. One of the new developments is a laser-additive batch based on PA12, which the manufacturer says has already proved successful in medical engineering.

Omya introduces new mineral modifiers
Switzerland´s Omya (CH-4665 Oftringen; www.omya.com) has developed new mineral modifiers for film applications and window profiles. “Omyafilm” 753-OM and the 780 and 782 grades have been designed for breathable films, while two calcium carbonate concentrates from the “Omyalene” family –112 m and 102 M – are intended for the production of polyolefin pipes and sheet. Finally, “Omyacarb SS T” with its polyolefin matrix is designed for use in plastic- coated cardboard packaging.

Multifunctional flame retardant from Luzenac
Luzenac (F-31035 Toulouse; www.luzenac.com) has expanded its “Firebrake” flame retardants range for K 2004. According to the manufacturer, the boron-based product Firebrake ZB can be used for PVC, PA, polyolefins and elastomers. The material has a wide range of potential applications.

Constab Masterbatches for PA and PBT
German Constab Polyolefin Additives GmbH (D-59602 Rüthen; www.constab.com) is expanding its product portfolio to include masterbatches from Israeli parent company, Kafrit. These encompass flame retardant concentrates based on engineering polymers such as PA, PBT, PC, ABS and PMMA. New products that have been developed are the halogen-free “M-0320” for PA 6 and PA 6.6, with and without glass fibre reinforcement, and also a PBT masterbatch which, like “M-0320”, attains a UL-V0 rating at 1.6 mm. Both products have been designed to ensure simplified material handling and reduced set-up and cleaning times.
