LINPAC PLASTICS
UK cling film factory to close / 50 redundancies / Production to be transferred to France
The Sedgefield / UK cling film production plant of Linpac Plastics (Knottingly, West Yorkshire / UK; www.linpac-plastics.co.uk) is to close by the end of June 2007. A total of 50 of the 52 permanent jobs will be lost. The former Filmco plant produces PVC cling film for the catering and retail markets in the UK and underwent downsizing in July 2004, when there were 73 compulsory redundancies.
At the time the company said the factory had been making losses for the previous five years, despite investment of GBP 1.8m (EUR 2.6m). The downsizing programme is now said to have been insufficient to make the plant commercially viable. No decision has been taken on disposal of the assets at the facility, but most of the production is being transferred to its sister plant in Pontivy / France, the company's centre of excellence for films.
