German specialty chemicals producer Lanxess (Cologne; www.lanxess.com) said it has expanded its Pocan family of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) compounds with a halogen free, flame retardant and hydrolysis-stabilised grade for high-voltage connector applications. The company has also launched its Pellart line of water-based urethane lacquer compounds for functional coating applications and has developed hot cast and cold cure systems for its Vibrathane MDI ether prepolymers said to bring ease of use, energy savings and a reduction of CO2 emissions.
Pocan BFN HR is a PBT compound reinforced 25% by weight with glass fibers. The structural material remains electrically insulating when exposed to high temperatures, strong currents and high voltages and does not allow tracking to occur, the supplier said, noting that it is suited for high-voltage applications with operating conditions up to 150° C and can be used at voltages higher than 600 volts.
The UL 94 V-0 flammability compliant material offers a high level of volume resistance and dielectric strength, Lanxess said, reporting that the material achieves a Comparative Tracking Index (CTI) A 600 rating, the highest class possible according to its IEC 60112 standard for insulation, which reduces the risk of short circuits and defects caused by creepage currents.
Lanxess said it will showcase sustainable and other polyurethane products at the upcoming K 2022 trade fair in Dusseldorf, Germany. This includes a hot cast and cold cure system for high-performance PU cast elastomers. The company noted that the system does not need to be heated during the casting process and can be cured at ambient temperature, which can reduce energy consumption 60% compared to hot cure/hot table technology, and it significantly reduces CO2 emissions.

Its Pellart compound is a water-based PU system that meets application requirements for haptics and gloss level while providing chemical and abrasion resistance and low content of volatile organic compounds (VOC).
Lanxess will also showcase its Adiprene LF and biobased Adiprene Green LF low free isocyanate prepolymers for the PU industry (see Plasteurope.com or 26.08.2020) at the trade fair in October. Lanxess is developing biobased LF MDI prepolymers for a wide range of NCO content that yield systems with lower viscosity at application temperature, improved high crystallinity, better wetting ability and fast green strength in reactive hot melt, and two-component adhesive formulations.
