Belgium's Futerro added to distributor's portfolio

Distributor K.D. Feddersen (Hamburg, Germany; www.kdfeddersen.global) now plans to distribute polylactide sourced from Belgian biopolymer producer Futerro (Escanaffles; www.futerro.com). The company said the contract includes products from the Renew brand and, in addition to countries in German-speaking Europe, also covers the UK and large parts of Eastern Europe. No information was provided on intended volumes.

PLA is currently still being imported from the Futerro plant in China. However, the first integrated biorefinery with connected PLA production in Port-Jérôme-sur-Seine near Le Havre (France) is scheduled to go into operation in 2027. The decision to build this plant, which is set to have a total capacity of 75,000 t/y of precursors and PLA, was announced by Futerro at the beginning of last year.
The biopolymer PLA can partially replace petroleum-based plastics in some areas of application, such as films and coatings, injection moulding, and thermoforming.
