In order to meet rising demand for polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), Japanese specialty chemicals producer Kureha (Tokyo; www.kureha.co.jp) has started building a new line in Changshu, Jiangsu / China. The ground-breaking for the facility was held on 7 June 2012.
The 93,000 m2 site will be home to a 5,000 t/y plant, which is expected to start operations in early 2014. Kureha has pegged the project’s investment cost at EUR 60m. The Japanese group said it expects PVDF consumption to rise as a result of increased production of lithium-ion chargers for mobile phones, laptops and other mobile devices as well as solar panels.
In mid-2011, the Japanese group had raised the PVDF output of its plant in Iwaki / Japan from 2,700 t/y to 4,000 t/y.
