JAVELIN PLASTICS
Ten new injection moulding machines / Hybrid design / Larger premises
Technical moulder Javelin Plastics (Camberley / UK; www.javelinplastics.co.uk) is installing 10 new injection moulding machines, valued in excess of EUR 500,000, as part of an expansion programme that will see it move into larger premises. The new machines, six with 50 t clamping force and four with 35 t clamp, are being supplied by Sumitomo Demag (Schwaig / Germany; www.sumitomo-shi-demag.eu) from its hybrid drive range. They are expected to start production in the second half of June and will take the total number of moulding machines at Javelin up to 70.

Turnover was up 23% last year at Javelin, as profits more than doubled. The new machines were originally intended to replace older models, but some of these are now continuing in operation in order to meet customer demand. The principal markets for Javelin are electrical, automotive and defence, with some 10% of output, mostly auto parts, currently being exported. Javelin moulds a wide range of polymers from polyolefins through a range of engineering plastics to more exotic types such as PEEK. Its moulding operations are supported by design, prototyping, tooling and assembly facilities.

Managing director Lee Reading says Javelin regularly reviews its machine portfolio and looked at many different machine suppliers before deciding on Sumitomo Demag's hybrid models. “Given the profile of products we produce,” said Reading, “we were restricted in terms of the types of machines we could work with.” Energy consumption and reliability were viewed as two important factors in the assessment, which concluded that electric machines would not give the required payback, particularly as their fast-cycling capability is not required for Javelin’s product range. The Systec hydraulic machines chosen are equipped with Sumitomo Demag’s own “Activedrive” energy reduction technology.

Privately-owned Javelin Plastics has been based in a 2,350m² factory supported by three smaller units. Now it is leasing the identical premises attached to its factory to create a single 4,700m² production facility. This is being fitted with a dedicated 2.5MW electrical supply to power the newly fitted-out manufacturing unit.
