— By Plasteurope.com staff —
The environmental division of utility company Iren (Reggio Emilia, Italy; www.gruppoiren.it/en) said it has installed a sorting plant for mixed waste in Borgaro Torinese, Italy. With a processing capacity of 100,000 t/y, it is the largest of its kind on the Apennine Peninsula, according to technology supplier Stadler (Altshausen, Germany; www.stadler-engineering.com).
The company said the new plant on the outskirts of Turin can separate 17 types of plastics, aluminium, and ferrous metals. Around 80% of the input material can then be fed into the circular economy.

Iren and Stadler have previously joined forces on a number of projects in Italy. Earlier collaborations involved developing plants for recycling electronic waste in Volpiano, recycling plastics in Pianezza, and for processing cardboard and plastics in Parma. There is also a sorting plant for plastic bottles and film in Asti.
