INNOVIA FILMS
UK cellophane film factory to be closed
One of the two cellophane plants operated in the UK by Innovia Films (GB-Wigton, Cumbria CA7 9BG; www.innoviafilms.com) is to be closed, with the loss of 250 jobs. The company says it has sufficient capacity at its factories in Wigton and Tecumseh, USA to meet demand and it no longer requires the output from its Bridgwater, Somerset site. The Bridgwater plant was opened by British Cellophane in 1937. It was acquired by UCB Group (www.ucb-group.com) in 1996 and became part of Innovia Films when the UCB Films business was bought by a venture capital consortium in October 2004 and subsequently renamed. Bridgwater has remained profitable and its proposed closure has been fought by trade union officials in the UK, who claimed that the loss-making Tecumseh factory was receiving US government incentives to keep it open.
