INJECTION MOULDING
Austrian plastics consumption almost 150,000 t in 2008 / PP accounts for the largest share / AMI study
Last year, Austria's injection moulding industry processed around 149,000 t of plastics, which was equivalent to 22% of the country's total thermoplastics consumption (765,000 t). Some 85% of this was standard material (PE, PP, PVC, PS and PET), the remainder was engineering plastics. Polypropylene accounted for the largest individual share. More than 80% of the nation's injection moulding companies work predominantly with this material. This and other market data emerge from the latest edition of the industry guide "The injection moulding industry in Austria" published by market research company Applied Market Information (AMI, Bristol / UK; www.amiplastics.com).
Plastics consumption in the country's injection moulding industry, says AMI, rose by an average of 1.5% a year between 2002 and 2008. The largest injection moulder of PP is Plastic Products Innovation (PPI, Ebensee; www.ppigroup.at), which produces industrial products as well as garden and leisure furniture – the latter under the company's own "Steiner" brand. The leading players in the packaging segment are Greiner Packaging (Kremsmünster; www.greiner-gpi.com) with PP and PS dairy packaging, Alpla-Werke Alwin Lehner (Hard; www.alpla.com) with closures and PET preforms, and Wolf Plastics Verpackungen (Kammern; www.wolfplastics.at) with screw jars, buckets and containers.
The largest injection moulders of technical parts in the country include High Tech Plastics (HTP, Neudörfl; www.htp.at), which supplies technical components primarily to the automotive, electronics and aircraft industries, Dietzel (Vienna; www.dietzel-univolt.com), which manufactures hose and cable systems, and FCI Austria (Mattighofen; www.fciconnect.com), which produces power connectors and accessory solutions for power supply. In the automotive sector, Robust Plastik (Mattighofen; www.robust-plastik.at), Theodor Fries (Sulz; www.fries.at) and EKB (Braunau; www.draexlmaier.de) play an important role. The main component manufacturers are Magna (Graz; www.magnasteyr.com) and Delphi Packard Austria (Großpetersdorf; www.delphi.com). Some 45% of the companies listed in the AMI directory supply the automotive industry.
The new revised version of the guide contains data on more than 180 injection moulders in Austria, subdivided into the type of moulding (custom moulder, in-house and proprietary products). The report also provides detailed information on the polymers used, the markets served, the product portfolio and the services offered by each company. It also covers the subsequent processing and machining processes such as welding, printing and assembly.
