Global PET leader Indorama Ventures (IVL, Bangkok; www.indoramaventures.com) said it has signed “world-first” license agreement with China’s Shandong Binhua New Material, to build, own and operate a propylene oxide (PO), t-Butanol (TBA) and t-Butyl methyl ether (MTBE) co-production unit. Shandong Binhau is a subsidiary of Chinese petroleum group Befar (Binzhou, Shandong; www.befar.com), which produces caustic soda and propylene oxide among others, and is one of China‘s leading oil additive suppliers.
The project in Binzhou, Shandong province is to feature the world’s only MTBE “single-step” reaction technology – a proprietary innovation of IVL – and is part of the “C3 and C4” comprehensive utilisation project in Shandong, which is one of the largest in the province and covers more than 1 mn m2.
The plant’s annual capacity is to be 600,000 t of propylene, 800,000 t of butane isomerisation, 150,000 t of synthetic ammonia, 240,000 t of propylene oxide and 742,000 t of MTBE.
