Southwestern city of Reykjavík to introduce new bins to sort domestic garbage
Several media reports indicate that the Icelandic city of Reykjavík, located in the southwest of the country, will start asking residents to sort their domestic garbage. The municipality reportedly plans to provide several special trash bins to Reykjavík households for that purpose. The city’s environment and transport division said it planned to have completed the distribution of these bins by January 2012.
The new system is to be introduced in stages and by neighbourhood. The municipality reportedly plans positive incentives for households that sort their garbage, in the form of a lower garbage collection fee.
According to Icelandic media, the city of Akureyri, in northern Iceland, already sorts paper, plastic, glass, metals and biological waste, with a similar arrangement in place in Ísafjördur, in the country’s West Fjords.
