Resin system launched for rail vehicle interiors / Combining aesthetics with functionality in composite parts
A new resin system – “Araldite” FST 40004/40005 – that is said to offer greater design freedom for interior rail vehicle concepts has been developed by Huntsman Advanced Materials (The Woodlands, Texas / USA; www.huntsman.com). The system, said Huntsman, allows high performance, lightweight composite components to be developed quickly, particularly small and medium parts. Large parts can be produced cost effectively at low temperature injection and a very low exotherm enables the accurate production of high thickness parts without any limitations on the part’s complexity and function integration, Huntsman explained.
“Araldite” FST 40004/40005 can be used in resin transfer moulding (RTM), infusion or pultrusion processes. Curing capabilities in RTM processes are said to be around 5 minutes at 150°C, and pultrusion speeds are around 12m per hour.
Commenting on the launch, marketing manager Laurent Pourcheron said users of the system can build shape while incorporating enhanced functionality into the part itself. “Interior components such as luggage shelves, tables, ceiling panels and even window trims can not only deliver the aesthetic design required but also serve as complete structures, providing a more cost-effective solution without the need or added expense of any additional elements,” he said.
Without the use of fillers, “Araldite” FST 40004/40005 has met the HL1/HL2 hazard level of fire safety testing under Europe’s EN45545-2 classification.
