HUHTAMAKI / POLARCUP
Packaging group with high growth rates
After a period of modest performance, Polarcup Group of Huhtamaki Oy (Etelaranta 8, SF-00130 Helsinki) posted a 37% increase in sales to FM 1,765m and a 146% improvement in operating earnings to FM 158m in 1992. The smooth integration of the Sweetheart International business, acquired at the end of 1991, made a significant contribution; however, a clear result improvement was evident across the board. In 1992, Polarcup successfully implemented a range of internal rationalisation and cost-cutting programmes. Virtually all units improved their market performance as well, despite competitive and environmental pressures. New business especially in East Europe offset declining sales in some countries. Capital expenditure, FM 138m, included the completion of the Spanish factory, as well as new thermoforming and printing lines.
In both plastic and paper technology, environmental considerations drive much of the development work. In practice, every new product must be environmentally superior to the one it replaces. Thus, lighter monomaterial solutions and recyclability command a high priority. Trials are also being conducted with biodegradable materials. From 1991 onwards, Polarcup has instigated and participated numerous collecting and recycling schemes for its products.
