PAN precursor production in Alabama restarted
Production of polyacrylnitrile (PAN) precursors for carbon fibre has resumed at the Decatur, Alabama / USA plant operated by Hexcel (Stamford, Connecticut / USA; www.hexcel.com). The facility was offline temporarily after electricity supply was hit by a tornado on 27 April – see Plasteurope.com of 04.05.2011.
Hexcel said there was no damage to production facilities as the structure was designed to withstand 200 mile-per-hour (320 kph) winds. The PAN materials manufactured in Alabama are processed to carbon fibres in Salt Lake City, Utah / USA and Illescas / Spain.
