Starting September 2021, Switzerland’s largest milk processor Emmi (Lucerne / Switzerland; https://group.emmi.com/che/de) plans to pack its chilled coffee drinks in cups containing 30% chemically recycled polypropylene. The PP material, which is processed by Greiner Packaging (Kremsmünster / Austria; www.greiner.at), is being supplied by Borealis (Vienna / Austria; www.borealisgroup.com).

Like numerous other filling companies, Emmi also intends to design all its packaging to be recyclable. By 2027, it aims to achieve a recyclate content of 30%. As a result of the latest change, some 100 t of primary material will be replaced annually by recycled plastic.

Borealis produces the chemically recycled polypropylene (“Borcycle C”) for the Emmi cups from post-consumer waste. The granules are certified to ISCC Plus (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification), and comply, according to Borealis, with the mass balance approach. This is a method with which the quantity and sustainability characteristics of circular and/or biobased materials can be traced in the value chain and in every step of the process.
