GERMAN PLASTICS MACHINERY
Exports climb by 2.3% in 2012 / Sales to China fall 16%
German exports of plastics and rubber machinery rose by 2.3% to EUR 4.4 bn last year, despite a slump in sales to East Asia, according to national plastics and rubber machinery association VDMA (Frankfurt; www.vdma.org). Exports growth was substantially slower than the 30.5% and 25.6% growth recorded for 2011 and 2010 respectively.
Sales to East Asia declined by 17%. “Not only was there a 16% fall in deliveries to China, but German exports to both Korea and Taiwan also plummeted by more than one third,” VDMA said. “Exports to India were likewise down by one third,” it added. In the ASEAN region, however, exports rose by 44%, with sales to Thailand up 64%, to Indonesia up 65% and to Malaysia up 20%.
China remained the largest export market, accounting for sales of EUR 640m, followed by the USA (EUR 546m), Russia (EUR 206m) and Poland (EUR 176m). “The US market is gaining ground on frontrunner China, which has been showing signs of weakness of late,” reported VDMA chairman Ulrich Reifenhäuser.
Exports of plastics and rubber machinery to North America improved by 21%, with 20% growth in the USA and 32% growth in Canada.
Sales to the EU increased at an above average rate of 10%, lifted by increases in Poland (30%), Austria (17%), the UK (21%) and the Czech Republic (25%).
Exports to South America also increased at an above average rate, of 7%. Deliveries to Brazil, South America’s largest market and the world’s sixth largest market, rose by 10%, and deliveries to Chile, South America’s second largest market, were 19% higher. Sales to Peru rose by 13%, while sales to Mexico were flat and sales to Argentina fell by 19%.
Deliveries by foreign manufacturers of plastics and rubber machinery to customers in Germany dipped by 0.8% to EUR 938m. Austria continues to be the main supplier, increasing its lead over Switzerland and Italy.
