EU risk review confirms safety of products containing brominated deca-BDE / Basis for REACH registration
The EU Competent Authorities have confirmed a risk review last evaluated in 2004 for the brominated flame retardant deca-BDE, paving the way for its registration under REACH. According to the Bromine Science and Environmental Forum (BSEF, Brussels / Belgium; www.bsef.com), the authorities for chemicals policy concluded that the risk assessment for the flame retardant did not identify any significant risks to the environment or human health.
At a meeting of the EU member states and the European Commission held in December in Lisbon / Portugal, the authorities agreed to proceed to formal publication of the updated Risk Assessment Report, which will provide a complete basis for registration of deca-BDE under REACH.
BSEF chairman Michael Spiegelstein said his organisation welcomes the EU’s decision, adding that the industry “reaffirms” its commitment to press on with the scientific studies and the voluntary emissions control programme in conjunction with the authorities.
