Global demand for OLED displays to reach USD 16 bn by 2020 / Polyimide is preferred carrier material / IDTechEx report
The global market for displays of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) will reach USD 16 bn in 2020 according to a new report by US market research company IDTechEx (www.idtechex.com) entitled "OLED Display Forecasts 2014 – 2024: The Rise of Plastic and Flexible Displays".
Distinguishing between rigid plastic displays and flexible displays, IDTechEx sees good opportunities for both. The former are already used in mobile devices, whose displays are not manufactured on glass but on a polyimide substrate. The market research company expects the first smart phones with a flexible display to be launched in 2017.

Other key end uses are TV sets, automotive applications and wearable electronics such as smart watches. The market for OLED TVs is still very small, IDTechEx says. That is set to change, however, as the researcher predicts an average growth rate of 42% a year over the course of the next decade.
