Debottlenecking of worldwide MMA plants will add 50,000 t/y of capacity / Rising demand cited
Chemicals and plastics group Evonik (Essen / Germany; www.evonik.com) has announced plans to debottleneck capacity at all of its worldwide plants for methyl methacrylate (MMA), widening output by 50,000 t/y. Citing rising global demand, the group said the expansion is to “support the growth of our customers.”
The German group regards itself as world’s number two producer of the feedstock for PMMA. As of last year, Evonik had nameplate capacity to produce around 580,000 t/y of MMA at four worldwide sites including Worms / Germany (230,000 t/y), Wesseling / Germany (100,000 t/y), New Orleans, Louisiana / USA (150,000 t/y) and Shanghai / China (100,000 t/y). It is also planning a greenfield MMA investment at an as yet undisclosed location. The new plant will use the group’s “Aveneer” technology.
Capacity for PMMA resins, produced at eight locations, totalled 270,000 t/y in 2010.
