From 23-24 September 2014, the Singapore-based Centre for Management Technology (CMT, www.cmtevents.com) is putting together the first “Africa PET: Resin Trade, Applications & Recycling” conference in Nairobi / Kenya. The two-day event will include a number of presentations on a range of topics, including how Africa’s PET demand can mitigate the global market imbalance, operational challenges for success in East Africa, the beverage outlook for sub-Saharan Africa as well as logistics, distribution and supply chain challenges. Aside from case examples by industry giants like Coca-Cola and Indorama, the sessions will also address specific markets, including South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Ivory Coast, Senegal and Mali.

The conference is set against the backdrop of rising demand for packaged water as well as an increase in consumer incomes in Africa, both factors that are driving the continent’s PET demand. After Indorama commissioned its 75,000 t/y PET plant in Port Harcourt / Nigeria in 2012 (for details, see Plasteurope.com of 23.07.2012), the resin distribution market has become more competitive, as PET is increasingly starting to replace traditional packaging formats.
