ERGOM
Leading Italian automotive moulder / 1996 turnover ITL 360 bn / JV with Solvay
Although established in 1972, it was not until the mid-1980s the Ergom Group (Via Stura 1-3, I-10071 Borgaro T.se / TO) moved into the car components market. Since then it has reorganised its manufacturing operations and acquired several new businesses to become one of the largest automotive moulding groups in Italy. Today the company operates 7 plants in Italy, one in Brazil and one in Poland. In April 1997 it started up a new plant in Argentina and by the end of 1998 expects to be operating in India. It has a 50% stake in Safiplast S.p.A. (S.S. 234, km 38, I-20070 Somaglia Lodigiana / MI), a manufacturer of blow moulded fuel tanks. It originally acquired the whole business about two years but decided to sell a half share to Solvay in order to establish a joint venture with an international supplier of fuel tanks.
The group is primarily involved in supplying Fiat with a whole range of automotive components and systems from air ducts to body panels. Ergom's plants are nearly all carrying out injection moulding expect for ERGOM Soffiaggio which produces blow moulded components. Turnover for 1996 was ITL 360bn with 1,200 employees.
