Bio-based high impact pre-pregs introduced / High water and chemical resistance / Flame retardant version to be follow
London-based chemical distribution company Elmira (www.elmira.co.uk) has introduced a range of bio-based pre-pregs, available with a selection of glass fibre and carbon reinforcements along with naturally derived fibre alternatives. “Coral” HIPP high impact pre-pregs are styrene free and are based on cashew nut shell liquid. The materials are claimed by the company to be the first commercially available bio-based pre-preg. A “Coral” fire retardant variant will also soon be available for mass transport and aerospace applications.

Elmira claims that these materials provide not only comparable curing characteristics, thermal stability and mechanical performance to conventional epoxy based pre-pregs but also offer increased impact strength along with better water and chemical resistance. They say these materials are suitable for a wide range of processes and curing requirements displaying high flow and laminate quality.
