US organic additive manufacturer EcoLogic (Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois; www.ecologic-llc.com) has had its proprietary “Eco-One” additives approved for food contact applications in Brazil. The group said Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency ANVISA (www.anvisa.gov.br) had found its “Eco-One” additives for enhancing the biodegradation of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) to be compliant with its resolution for use in food contact applications.

The group said the PP and PE grades were the first to gain compliance, adding that it plans to submit additional “Eco-One” grades to ANVISA in the near future. Commenting on the approval, Tamas Vero of TIV Plasticos (São Paulo; http://tivplasticos.com.br) – which distributes EcoLogic’s grades in Brazil – said that “gaining ANVISA approval in Brazil is comparable to FDA approval in the US. This exciting news paves the way for Eco-One to be used in a wide variety of common food packaging applications.”

In early August, the US group had reached an agreement with Mexico’s GEA Biodegradables for the latter to distribute its “Eco-One” additive throughout Mexico.

Founded in January 2010, EcoLogic manufactures its proprietary organic “Eco-One” additive, which enhances the biodegradation of plastic products in a biologically active landfill.
