Development of new process technology for MEG
US-based Eastman Chemical (Kingsport, Tennessee; www.eastman.com) has introduced a new process for the production of polyester component mono ethylene glycol (MEG), using synthesis gas-based feedstocks. Working together with the UK's Johnson Matthey Davy Technologies (JM Davy, London; www.davyprotech.com) the new process technology allows for the manufacture of MEG using a variety of raw materials, including coal, natural gas, or biomass and is based on new, proprietary catalysts and process design developed jointly by Eastman and JM Davy.

In contrast to other recent syngas-based processes, the new technology does not involve oxalate intermediates. The company said extensive pilot plant demonstration is nearing completion with the first demonstration in the planning phase.
