DUPONT
New high temperature TPE "Hylene"
The DuPont group (European HQ: PO Box 50, CH-1218 Le Grand-Saconnex) has brought out in test quantities a new PPDI-based high temperature thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) "Hylene", which it claims "fills the need for thermoplastic urethanes (TPU) in demanding applicatons." In particular, heat resistance is greater than that of conventional TPUs, says DuPont. Because of its high crystallisation rate, cycle times while processing can be reduced by 25-50%, and the US group claims that depending on the formulation "Hylene" can withstand temperatures of up to 135° C. 'Modulus at 100% elongation remains at a high level even at extreme heat, according to the manufacturer. Markets targeted are shock absorbers, clutches, driving belts for motor drives, as well as sealants in hydraulic machinery.
