Strategic alliance with Ascend for supply of PA 6.6 base polymer
Material sciences company Royal DSM (Heerlen / The Netherlands; www.dsm.com) has formed an alliance with chemicals, fibres and plastics specialist Ascend Performance Materials (Houston, Texas / USA; www.ascendmaterials.com) for the supply of compounds based on PA 6.6.
Through the agreement, Ascend becomes the strategic supplier to DSM for PA 6.6 base polymer used as raw material for “Akulon” PA 6.6 compounds for engineering plastics applications. Additionally, DSM will distribute Ascend’s range of PA 6.6 “Vydyne” compounds.
Ascend produces PA 6.6 base polymer at two sites in the US – in Pensacola, Florida and Greenwood, South Carolina. The plants have capacity for 412,000 t/y and 85,000 t/y respectively and manufacture not only engineering types but also a lot of fibre grades. In late 2013, Ascend built its own compounding plant in Pensacola, capable of producing 30,000 t/y (see Plasteurope.com of 25.10.2013).
