Start-up of new chlor-alkali joint venture in Texas / Facility replaces older unit
Dow Chemical (Midland, Michigan / USA; www.dow.com) and Mitsui & Co (Mitsui / Japan; www.mitsui.com/eu) have started up their new joint venture membrane chlor-alkali facility in Freeport, Texas / USA. The plant, which has reached full-scale commercial production, has the capacity to produce 800,000 t/y of chlorine and will replace an older 800,000 t/y facility at the site – see Plasteurope.com of 05.12.2013.
Dow said it will use its share of the chlorine produced at the Dow-Mitsui Chlor-Alkali facility to support the integration of the chlorine value chain at the Freeport site. The US group will market the caustic soda on behalf of the jv.
“This world-class facility allows us to capitalise on our modern and efficient membrane chlor-alkali technology and serves as a real-life proof point of how new, competitive energy resources in the US are re-shaping the landscape of US Gulf Coast manufacturing,” said Dow executive vice president Jim Fitterling.
