New “Styron A-Tech” for packaging / Keen competition for the company´s “Styron 472”
Following last year´s launch of “Styron A-Tech 1110” and “1120” as a completely new PS product family for glossy parts and coatings (see Plasteurope.com 11, 1999), PS world market leader Dow Plastics – Europe: Dow Europe S.A. (Bachtolbelstr. 3, CH-8810 Horgen) has now presented “Styron A-Tech 1200” as a further offspring of this family. The new packaging material has been developed specially for pre- formed dairy product pots, form-fill-seal (FFS) films and one-way beakers.
Dow is speaking in terms of a 5 to 7% improvement in cycle times and a more uniform wall thickness distribution than with conventional polystyrene. The containers produced will also withstand 10% more stress and are 20% more stable. “Styron A-Tech 1200” has a higher flowability and improved compatibility, giving packaging products with thinner walls and a lighter weight, without any sacrifice of stability, says Matthias Stümcke, product marketing manager, in praise of the new material. In addition to this, it can be “processed without any changes to the extruder settings.” He thus sees the material´s chief rival as being Dow´s own PS “Styron 472” – already a high-level product in itself.
