DECEUNINCK
1998: Major increases in sales and profit / Global presence with window and construction profiles / Little interest in the German market
In the 1998 financial year, group sales at the Belgian window and construction profile manufacturers Deceuninck Plastics Industries N.V. (Bruggesteenweg 164, B-8830 HoogledeGits) rose by an above-average 14% to EUR 227,2m. Net earnings increased 21% to EUR 17.7m. According to the company, sales in the euro and dollar zones are now well-balanced. Although the company got off to a bad start in 1999 because of the adverse winter weather, Deceuninck is expecting a continued rise in sales and profits in the course of the year. And: “we are not excluding the possibility of further acquisitions or joint ventures”. See also Plasteurope.com 04, 1999.
According to information from Deceuninck, building activity developed at different rates in the individual regions of Western Europe. The Belgian market displayed only low growth as a result of the government introducing further new regulations which led to a clear reduction in building activity. France and Spain developed favourably, contrary to the case in Great Britain where a poor climate prevailed in the construction sector throughout the year. In Germany, overcapacity in window and construction profiles led to extremely harsh competition, making any financial investment a reckless undertaking says Deceuninck. It is thus keeping its presence in Germany to a minimum.
The markets in Central and Eastern Europe, by contrast, developed favourably for Deceuninck over the first half of 1998, although the Russian market collapsed in the summer. Despite this crisis, the company is pursuing its commitment in these areas – as is underlined by the fact that it now employs around 100 staff there. The construction industry in the US was able to repeat its excellent result of the previous year, with Deceuninck participating strongly in this. The company studied the markets developing in China and South America and examined possibilities for joint ventures.
In 1998, Deceuninck made further progress on its strategic plan of making the group one of the world´s leading suppliers of windows and construction profiles. The company has achieved this objective on virtually every European and North American market.
