Global launch of credit cards made from recycled PETG
Visa (Foster City, California / USA; www.visa.com) and the CPI Card Group (Littleton, Colorado / USA; www.cpicardgroup.com) have launched the “Earthwise High Content” card, which is made with up to 98% recycled plastic, depending on the card design. The new card is produced from post-industrial PETG recyclate and also has non-plastic components such as the EMV chip, antenna and adhesives.

Available to all Visa-issuing financial institutions worldwide, the Earthwise High Content card is part of CPI’s “Earth Elements” range of payment cards that includes the patent-pending “Second Wave” card made with ocean plastics. A February 2020 survey conducted by the CPI Card Group showed that 94% of debit and credit card users are “concerned” about ocean plastics waste, and 64% percent are “very concerned”. Around 53% said they would switch to another financial institution if a card made with recovered ocean plastics was offered with the same features and benefits.
According to the California-based credit card giant, around 3.3 bn Visa cards are in use in more than 200 countries.
