Chemicals group to build TPU development centre in China

Polyurethanes and polycarbonate specialist Covestro (Leverkusen, Germany; www.covestro.com) has announced plans to build a centre for the application development of thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) in Guangzhou, China. Construction is scheduled to start at the end of 2024 and the centre is expected to start operating in 2025. The company did not disclose the investment amount.

At the new centre, Covestro plans to develop applications for TPU films (PPF), cables and in the fields of electronics, mobility, and shoe manufacturing and to implement them for extrusion and injection moulding applications.

The German company is currently building a TPU production plant in Zhuhai Gaolan Port in Guangdong, about 130 km south of the planned construction. The complex in the coastal city of Zhuhai is to have a capacity of 120,000 t/y and is to be built in three phases. The first expansion phase with a production capacity of around 30,000 t/y is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
