A new plastic for wearable medical devices has been developed by Covestro (Leverkusen / Germany; www.covestro.com), formerly Bayer MaterialScience. Demand for these devices is growing as a result of the trend towards out-patient treatment and in-home care. The small and lightweight products, which perform various functions such as monitoring vital signs during physical activity or administering drugs, can be worn by patients without limiting their mobility.
“Makroblend” M525 is a very durable and high impact-resistant PC/polyester blend that meets international standards for the biological testing of medical devices, primarily cytotoxicity (ISO 10993-5) and irritation and sensitisation (ISO 10993-10).
The plastic, which shows good resistance to body lotions and other skincare products, can be formed into any shape and produced in a variety of shades to meet current design needs. In addition, it is compatible with standard manufacturing processes, such as ultrasonic welding and adhesive bonding.
Covestro will be presenting “Makroblend” M525 at this year's Compamed (www.compamed-tradefair.com) trade fair in Düsseldorf, Germany from 16-19 November.
