Coster (Pero / Italy; www.coster.com) has bought and installed four aluminium silos from Barton Fabrications (Bristol / UK; www.bartonfabs.co.uk) for its aerosol valve manufacturing location in Barlborough / UK. This forms part of the site's expansion and helps Coster's move into manufacturing its own actuator components.
David Fearn, operational manager at Coster UK, said the company had not previously used injection moulders at Barlborough and so did not have silo installation experience, but received comprehensive support from Barton. The silos are 12 m high and 3.5 m in diameter, each with a capacity of 55 t. The company said two silos are currently being used for PP feedstock for the new production line, with the additional silos ready for planned further expansion at the site.
The company has nearly doubled the size of its production plant in Barlborough, making the total floorspace 8,500m². Established in 2013, the facility has an annual production capacity of 400m valves. The expansion features an injection moulding department – a first for the company – as well as an assembly department for spray caps, special actuators and spray pumps.
Coster said production from its plant in Stevenage / UK ended in September 2018, with most activity transferred to Barlborough and some to the firm’s plant in Zwolle / The Netherlands. An unspecified number of staff were offered the chance to relocate from Stevenage to the Barlborough facility.
The Italian company was founded in 1963 and has around 900 employees at 16 factories in 10 countries. Coster specialises in aerosol valves, actuators, spray caps, spray pumps and dispensers. In Europe, its other production plants are in Trento / Italy and Torelló / Spain and it has sales and distribution offices in Mitry-Mory / France and Ettlingen / Germany. Coster's other manufacturing sites are in Johor Bahru / Malaysia, Bhiwadi, Rajasthan / India, South Elgin, Illinois / USA and Buenos Aires / Argentina, and it has an additional sales office in São Paulo / Brazil. The Italian company also manufactures filling machines, with its machinery division located in Pero.
