Latin American composites association Associação Latino-Americana de Materiais Compósitos (Almaco, São Paulo / Brazil; www.almaco.org.br) has elected a new president. Previously general manager of Almaco, Erika Bernardino Aprá succeeds long-time president Gilmar Lima to head the association for at least three years. An additional term is possible.
Almaco has 400 members from Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Columbia. According to data from MaxiQuim (Porto Alegre / Brazil; www.maxiquim.com.br), 202,000 t of composites were processed in 2018 in Brazil, the largest of the markets represented by the association. This figure is an increase of 3.1% compared with the previous year. Sales also rose by 3.8% to about BRL 2.7 bn (EUR 640m), less than Lima had projected in May 2018 – see Plasteurope.com of 31.05.2018. However, the number of employees in the industry increased substantially to about 63,000.
