COLORMATRIX
PET additive technologies recognised by EPBP recycling scheme
ColorMatrix (Berea, Ohio / USA; www.colormatrix.com) said its oxygen scavenging “HyGuard” and light blocking “Ultimate UV” technologies have been recognised by the European PET Bottle Platform (EPBP, www.epro-plasticsrecycling.org/PETbottleplatform) recycling scheme.

Launched in 2009, EFBP helps the packaging industry assess new PET bottle formats entering the plastics recycling stream – see Plasteurope.com of 17.03.2009. It includes experts from associations including the European Plastics Recyclers (EuPR, Brussels / Belgium; www.eupr.org), the European Association of Plastics Recycling & Recovery Organisations (EPRO, Brussels; www.epro-plasticsrecycling.org) and PET Containers Recycling Europe (Petcore, Brussels; www.petcore.org).
HyGuard is a catalytic barrier system that works in conjunction with the bottle closure system, leaving the container wall free of additive materials that could affect container clarity and limit recyclability, ColorMatrix said. Assuming a market penetration of 10%, EPBP concluded that the HyGuard catalyst formulation HyCat-1 would have no negative impact on current European PET recycling at its maximum use level of 0.1%.
ColorMatrix said its Ultimate UV390 technology can help extend shelf life for UV sensitive food, beverage, personal care and home cleaning products. The EPBP’s evaluation concluded no negative impact on recyclability for Ultimate UV 390-1 and Ultimate UV390.CC-1 at addition rates of 0.15%. The HyGuard and Ultimate UV technologies have already been recognised by the US Association of Post Consumer Plastic Recyclers (APR, Washington, DC; www.plasticsrecycling.org), the company added.
