Raising “Adiprene” MDI prepolymer output in Italy / MbOCA-free alternative meets REACH obligations

Chemtura (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania / USA; www.chemtura.com) will lift production capacity of its “Adiprene” low free (LF) MDI polyurethane elastomers at its plant in Latina / Italy by the end of this year. Investment cost and nameplate capacity were not disclosed. The expansion will increase the company’s flexibility to supply the material, which it also manufactures at its plant in Gastonia, North Carolina / USA.
The US group foresees a rise in demand for “Adiprene” – part of Chemtura’s premium replacement technology for 4,4'-methylenebis(2-chloroaniline) – also known as MbOCA. The latter, a curing agent used in PU production, is suspected of being carcinogenic and its use will be restricted under ECHA's (Helsinki / Finland; http://echa.europa.eu) REACH chemicals legislation from November 2017 onwards.
Chemtura said its Adiprene family of MDI prepolymers offers improved processing over other MbOCA-free alternatives and performs well even in highly demanding urethane applications.
