Expansion of US production of UHMW-PE / Electric vehicles drive demand
Celanese (Dallas, Texas / USA; www.celanese.com) has reacted to expected growth for electric vehicles and the corresponding market for separator films for batteries by announcing a further production expansion for ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE). The capacity for the “GUR” brand material at its US site in Bishop, Texas, is to increase by 15,000 t/y, the company said. Construction is reportedly underway, and the supplier said completion is due in early 2022.

According to the PIE database Polyglobe (www.polyglobe.net), the capacity at the location will increase to 53,000 t/y. Celanese expanded its capacity for PE-UHMW in 2017 in Nanjing / China to 25,000 t/y. Its European facility in Oberhausen / Germany has production facilities for 40,000 t/y, so the Texas addition will push Celanese's total capacity to almost 120,000 t/y.
“Electric vehicle demand is expected to have a compounded annual growth rate of greater than 25% through 2025, said Tom Kelly, head of the company's engineered materials division.
