In January, packaging manufacturer CCL Industries (Toronto, Canada; www.cclind.com) moved into a plant in Dornbirn, Austria, for the production of sleeve labels. The company announced that the new production site replaces the smaller, older facility in Hohenems, only 7 km away. In Dornbirn, a building with an area of almost 10,000 m² was erected on the 20,000 m² site, which is more than twice as large as the previous plant in Hohenems.

This also creates an additional 60 jobs, bringing the plant’s workforce to 220 employees. The investment amounts to EUR 50 mn.

“The relocation has brought plenty of improvements,” said Günther Birkner, member of the CCL management team. The new building has the ISO 14001 certification, and features a photovoltaic system on the roof, and a heat recovery system. Together with the solid construction, CCL can cover more than 80% of its electricity requirements on site. According to the company, this would save 338 t/y of CO₂ emissions.

The new plant in Dornbirn produces EcoFloat shrink films made of LDPE. When used as labels, CLL says, these also offer a sustainability aspect because they are attached to bottles or containers by heat instead of adhesives. This means they can be removed from the packaging after use by a sink-float process and recycled.

CCL has 205 production sites worldwide with over 25,000 employees. In 2022, the Canadian group generated sales of CAD 6.4 bn (EUR 4.4 bn).
