CARDIA BIOPLASTICS
Agreement reached with NatureWorks Packaging to expand international reach / Bio-based blends for films
Two Australian companies are teaming up to develop bag and waste management products for the global markets they serve. NatureWorks Packaging Australia (NPA, Perth; www.natureworkspackaging.com) which produces and supplies biodegradable packaging and products primarily to customers in Asia and Australia, has selected Cardia Bioplastics (Melbourne; www.cardiaplastics.com) to increase the sales of compostable and “Biohybrid” bag and waste management products.
Established in 2002, the Melbourne company develops, manufactures and markets its patented renewable resource-based materials and finished products using proprietary technology for the global packaging and plastic product industries (see also Plasteurope.com of 21.02.2014).
The two entities, which are building on a previous cooperation, have announced they have already received initial orders for the products. “We are continuing to see increased demand globally for our resins, films and finished products,” noted Frank Glatz, managing director at Cardia Bioplastics. The company’s product development centre and manufacturing facility for its resins and finished goods is located in Nanjing / China.
Cardia’s Biohybrid resins are a blend of renewable thermoplastic materials and traditional polyolefins and the company claims its customers can increase the renewable content of their products by up to 50% in addition to reducing the carbon footprint. Its resins are colourable and printable and can be converted on existing equipment for applications in films, injection moulding, blow moulding, extrusions and coatings.
