BRASKEM
First representative office opened in Asia / Serving regional customers from hub in Singapore
In order to be better placed to serve its customers in Asia, Brazilian petrochemicals giant Braskem (São Paulo; www.braskem.com.br) on 18 May opened its first regional commercial operations and logistics centre in Singapore. “Having a physical presence in Asia will allow us to get to know the players in the region better and to learn more about the dynamics of the local market, while also helping us identify opportunities for Braskem’s future growth,” said Rodrigo Carnaúba, head of international business in the gorup’s Basic Petrochemicals unit.

Initially, the new centre will focus on basic petrochemicals. Braskem’s exports to Asia currently encompass mostly olefins, including propylene, butadiene and butene. In the wake of the biofuel law passed in Japan in H2 2010, the Brazilian company also hopes to increase sales of bioadditive ETBE to Japan.

Braskem’s revenues from exports totalled USD 4.2 bn in 2010, which constituted a 56% increase over 2009. Most exports were destined for Asia and the US but the European market is increasingly gaining importance. Market insiders have speculated that the Brazilian group plans to win a large share of Europe's polyolefin market by offering competitive prices, even if Braskem does not have own production lines here yet.
