BORSOD CHEM
Hungary: High investment in plastics production / New capacities for PVC and MDI
The second-largest Hungarian chemical group, BorsodChem Rt. (PF 208, H-3702 Kazincbarcika), has decided to implement a wide-ranging investment program for the current financial year. The focus will be on increasing capacities for the manufacture of feedstocks for plastics, for which the company has earmarked a total of around HUF 8.0bn (approx. DEM 70m).
Approximately three quarters of this year's investment budget will go into three projects: capacities for PVC production are to be stepped up from their current 250,000 t/y to 290,000 t/y, while MDI capacity is to be raised by a quarter to 40,000 t/y. The third project involves the technological rejuvenation and expansion of VCM production. Raising MDI output also means increasing the production of formaldehyde. For this purpose, BorsodChem has set up a joint venture, BC-KC Formalin Kft., together with the Austrian firm Krems Chemie AG (A-3470 Kirchberg). The new company will soon be dedicating a new facility on the chemical site of Kazincbarcika (northern Hungary), which will have a capacity of 40,000 t/y formaldehyde.
