Austrian polyolefin group Borealis (Vienna; www.borealisgroup.com) has announced the launch of its recycled linear low-density polyethylene grade for non-food flexible packaging applications.

Its new Borcycle M CWT120CL grade was developed together with Ecoplast Kunststoffrecycling (Wildon, Austria; www.ecoplast.com), which Borealis acquired in 2018. According to the company, it is produced with 85% post-consumer recyclate and 15% LLDPE booster.

The polyolefin group developed the Borcycle M CWT120CL flexible packaging grade, utilising its Borcycle M mechanical recycling technology. Designed specifically for blown-film applications across primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging, the grade is ideal for stretch film, stretch hoods, and films used in agricultural, industrial, and protective applications, the company said.

After more than two years of collaboration with Ecoplast, Borealis successfully tackled the challenges of incorporating a high proportion of recycled content while maintaining the stringent performance standards required for flexible packaging. The rLLDPE grade significantly reduces the carbon footprint of the final product, helping users meet their sustainability goals, the firm added.

With its new grade, the Austrian company is also responding to the requirements of the European packaging regulation PPWR, which stipulates mandatory recycled content quotas for plastic packaging from 2030.

Last year, Borealis set up a demonstration plant for the compounding of recyclate-based polyolefins at its Beringen site in Belgium. The plant processes post-consumer waste (HDPE and polypropylene) using the company’s own Borcycle M technology.
