Supply of chemically recycled PE for water pipes in Vienna

Austrian Polyolefins producer Borealis (Vienna; www.borealisgroup.com) has supplied its BorSafe polyethylene material, which the group claims has at least 90% chemically recycled content, to create more than 600 metres of water pipe being laid in Vienna.

Borealis provided the material to pipe manufacturer Pipelife, which laid the pipes totalling 660 metres for Wasser Wien, the city’s freshwater provider. Pipelife is owned by Wienerberger (Vienna; www.wienerberger.com), a construction materials producer.
Mechanically recycled polyethylene and polypropylene usually do not meet the standards required for pressure pipe applications. Borealis said it was able to deliver this via its Borcycle C technology, which allows polyolefin-based waste to be chemically recycled into virgin-quality plastics.

Borealis said, “The integrity of the approach is verified by ISCC Plus certification which covers the entire supply chain, from raw material to final product, guaranteeing compliance with strict sustainability standards.” Pipelife said the water pipes utilising Borsafe are sustainable and leak-tight, and have an expected lifespan of over 100 years.
