Borealis (Vienna; www.borealisgroup.com) has sealed another renewable energy deal with leading Austrian electricity provider Verbund (Vienna, www.verbund.com).
The 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) to begin in January 2023 covers supply of hydropower to Borealis’ domestic operations in Schwechat and complements the recent installation of a photovoltaic facility at the olefins and polyolefins group’s site (see Plasteurope.com of 28.11.2022).
Verbund, which claims to generate some 97% of its electricity from renewable sources – primarily hydro – is to provide the site with 220 GWh of power from hydropower plants on the Danube River.

Borealis said the deal moves the company closer to its goal of sourcing 100% renewable electricity by 2030 for its main businesses of polyolefin and hydrocarbon production.
The new long-term agreement for Schwechat, Borealis noted, is also a “significant step” toward decarbonisation as it will reduce the site’s Scope 2 emissions by around 75,000 t/y.
Thanks to cross-sector partnerships with Verbund, the resin maker’s CEO Thomas Gangl said: “The ambitious sustainability targets set forth in our Borealis Strategy 2030 are rapidly coming into reach.”
