Strategic partnership with German Reclay to recycle packaging waste

German waste management service provider Reclay Group (Herborn; www.reclay-group.com) plans to supply plastic packaging waste to polyolefin producer Borealis (Vienna, Austria; www.borealisgroup.com), which intends to use the refuse to produce recyclates for high-quality, new applications.

According to Borealis, the partnership gives it access to a secure and consistent supply of raw materials in the form of light packaging waste collected by Reclay as part of the dual waste management system in Germany. This, in turn, enables partners, customers, and brand owners along the value chain to meet their recycling quotas and expand the use of plastics recyclate.

The deal is part of a broad reclaim strategy at Borealis. The company has been operating a recycling plant for LDPE and HDPE from post-consumer waste generated by households and industries at its subsidiary Ecoplast (Wildon, Austria; www.ecoplast.at) since 2019 (see Plasteurope.com of 17.10.2019). In addition to mechanical plastics recycling – via various company acquisitions and cooperations in the past few years – the raw materials group also uses processes for chemical reclaim or a combination of both technologies, for example via a minority stake in Belgian recycling start-up Renasci (see Plasteurope.com of 05.07.2021).
