BLOW MOULDING
Western Europe: 1,000 factories, 10,000 machines / Concentration in Germany
The location of more than 10,000 blow moulding machines across Western Europe is shown in the new 1993-1994 edition of AMI's Guide to the blow moulding industry in Western Europe, published by Applied Market Information Ltd (AMI, GB-Bristol). This comprehensive directory lists over 1,000 blow moulding factories and gives, for the first time, the number of machines each site operates. This shows that Europe's largest blow moulding sites are:
* Alpla Werke, Markdorf, Germany
* Alpla Werke, Steinabrückl, Austria
* BP Chemicals, Leicester, UK
* Kautex Werke, Bonn, Germany
* Kautex Werke, Eschwege, Germany
* Kerplas, Offranville, France
* Mauser Werke, Brühl, Germany
* Plysu, Milton Keynes, UK
All these sites are operating more than 100 machines. It is not surprising that 4 of the 8 largest factories are in Germany as the largest concentration of blow moulding technology occurs here. More than 2,000 machines are in operation in Germany which gives an average of 14 machines per factory compared with 11 for Europe.
Number of machines is not everything, however, and the guide also gives an indication of the size of each moulder according to the volume of polymer they use. More than 40% of the moulders listed in AMI's guide are using between 500 and 5000 tonnes of material a year. A further 38% fall below the 500 tonnes level whilst just 10% were identified as doing more than 5000 tonnes a year. The remaining 12% failed to provide any information on their polymer throughput.
The AMI guide also gives information on the types of polymer each site uses, the size of mouldings they manufacture and the end use markets they are working for. It thus provides a complete picture on the activities of all Europe's blow moulders including in-house operations such as mineral water companies, dairies and cosmetics companies. For example: The largest custom blow moulding group operating in Western Europe presently is the packaging group CarnaudMetalbox who have more than 20 plants in 6 countries.
