Carbon black producer to expand production / More capacity for Asian, European markets

Indian carbon black producer Birla Carbon (Mumbai, Maharashtra, India; www.birlacarbon.com) has announced plans to add capacity in China, India, and Hungary, its only European facility to produce the material for plastics. The amount of the investment for the projects was not disclosed.
The company, headed by John Loudermilk since summer 2021, said the 200,000 t/y increase in available carbon black output for rubber, elastomers, and plastics is expected to be completed by 2024 and boost Birla’s current combined capacity at its 16 sites around the world by 10%.
The company said it would extend its Chinese and Indian production by 80,000 t/y each, with 40,000 t/y planned for its site in Tiszaújváros, Hungary. After multiple expansions, capacity at the latter is at 130,000 t/y, meaning the latest investment would add around a third. The plant was completed in 1994 and supplies the European market and North Africa.
