BIOPOLYMERS
French institute lays cornerstone for bio-based materials research centre in Lille / Focus on renewables
At the end of June, the French materials research grouping Institut Francais des Materiaux Agro-Sourcés (IFMAS, Villeneuve d’Ascq; www.ifmas.eu) laid the cornerstone for its new biopolymers R&D centre at Lille. The centre planned to open in 2015 will focus on new technologies to produce innovative biopolymers from locally sourced agricultural resources such as maize or potatoes.

The work of the institute founded in 2012 is being supported by a EUR 30m grant from the EU and other institutions. The 2,400 m² premises will house laboratories for organic synthesis, polymer synthesis and plastics processing, among other functions. A staff of around 100 researchers will be employed.
Initiators of the project are several French universities and industrial partners such as starch producer Roquette Frères (Lestrem / France; www.roquette.com), which produces its own bioplastics under the "Gaialene" trademark – see Plasteurope.com of 24.02.2012 – and composites specialist Mäder (Killwangen / Switzerland; www.waltermaeder.ch).
