BIOPLASTICS
Aimplas collaborates with EU's Preserve project / Development of bio-based plastic packaging
Aimplas (Valencia; www.aimplas.net), the Spanish plastics technology unit, has teamed up with European Union’s Preserve project to develop PHA-based water vapour barrier coatings for bioplastics and reinforced materials.
As part of its involvement in the research, Aimplas said it is also developing reinforcement materials in conventional compounding and flat-sheet extrusion processes to improve the mechanical properties of recycled bioplastics.

The Preserve project has 26 participating partners from nine countries across Europe. It says its main goal is to replace the fossil-based plastics used in food and beverage packaging with bio-based plastics.
Lola Gómez, principal investigator of the project at Aimplas, said the research covered the development of barrier coatings based on proteins and PHA, as well as bio-based adhesives, the application of e-beam irradiation to improve barrier and mechanical properties, and the development of polymer reinforcement technologies to improve the properties of recycled bioplastics.
